DESAM launches antiplastic drive

DESAM today launched a drive and seized conventional plastic/ polythene bags from various shops along Masjidroad, Paona bazar today.
Speaking to media persons, DESAM president Moirangthem Angamba said that the drive aim to reduce the use of plastic or polythene bags so as to help conserve the.
environment.
He said that there had been an order prohibiting the sale or use of plastic bags thinner than 50 micron and pointed out that recent plastic bags/ polythene imported from Myanmar through Moreh as well as from other Indian States, all ranges from 10 to 30 microns.
Angamba said that the drive was launched today, after DESAM gave prior warning to refrain from using such plastic bags, and added that the students' organisation will carry out more such drives in the future.
He also urged the State Government to introduce biodegradable plastic bags and also to ban conventional polythene bags.
The seized plastic bags and polythene will be handed over to Manipur Pollution Control Board or the Environment and Ecology Wing or to any other authority concerned, he added.
