The Economic and Resource Development Or-ganisation (ERDO), Kanglei-pak and Manipur Potato & Onion Freight Union has appealed to all concerned not to hike price of essential commodities taking undue advantage of the restive sit-uation but to help address inconveniences faced by the public.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday, ERDO secretary general N Shanta said that the present situation in the state has affected economic activities with maximum of the essential commodities almost running out of stock.
As of now, potatoes and on-ions have exhausted in all the warehouses.
Twenty-five trucks loaded with potatoes and onions are stranded on the way to Imphal.
The local traders are tak-ing advantage of the present situation and hiking prices of all essential commodi-ties from 15 to 20 percent.
Even at this point of time when the people are suffer-ing, shops are selling goods at exorbitant prices and it is not known to whom the public should complain, he said while stressing the need for the government to open a helpline number to solicit complaints.
The secretary general also observed that in case the traders are allowed to dictate terms then clubs, organisations and philan-thropists providing help to the communal-riot victims sheltered in various relief camps would be demoralised.
He also appealed to the government to ensure avail-ability of cash in the ATMs as the people are facing dif-ficulties without hard cash.
Shanta also pointed out spike in rate of flight tickets from Imphal to Delhi to Rs 30,000.The organisation's members in Delhi will write to the DGCA to control the price of flight tickets during this time of crisis, he said.
