Imphal, September 05 2016:
The Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) has urged both the Government of India and the State Government to resolve the row over Indo-Myanmar boundary.
Speaking to media persons at their Lamlong office today, ICHAM president N Rajendro urged Government to resolve the issue over missing border pillar number 66 (earlier 33) at Tuivang in Khengjoy sub-division in Chandel district.
Although the area is definitely within the territory of Manipur, Indian citizens settled along the international boundary cannot go to the area on account of contested claims over the area.
Pointing that India and Myanmar is holding a bilateral meeting at Dehradun over boundary issues, Rajendro said that all outstanding boundary issues that exist between the countries in Manipur including the one at Tuivang should be resolved once for all.
He said that ICHAM would submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Tuivang village vice-chairman Jamkhothang Haokip said that even though Tuivang was earlier occupied by Myanmar, a bilateral meeting held between the two countries agreed that the area belongs to Myanmar.
However, border pillar number 33 erected there was removed Myanmarese villagers.
Although Tuivang is said to be within India, Indian villagers feel insecure to go and settle there, he said.
