Rains lash several areas in Manipur

Imphal, April 05 2015 : From drizzle in the past few days it had become torrential rains since last night.

With the coming of the seasonal rains the parched fields and dried up ponds and rivers have started having comfortable levels of water.

Now that the river water could be harvested and pumped into the water treatment plants official indications are that some of the plants may start supplying water again.

Reports said that there were some destructions in villages in the valley.

Houses, granaries and other constructions were partially damaged by the strong wind and hailstorm followed by torrential rains.

The sky is stil overcast and many parts of the state experienced heavy downpours today also.

Weatherman is forecasting more rains in the coming days.

This has brought relief to the farmers who were distraught since they did not know how they would plant anything in the parched fields.

During the downpour people were seen storing the rain waters in all available buckets, pitchers and utensils.

This is also means the beginning of the end of the lucrative water supplying business by some private suppliers.

Once the PHED had stopped supplying water these private suppliers had started selling water at the rate of Rs 300 per 1000 litre.

There was no dearth of persons wanting to buy it since there is no alternative source.

Bottled water was also in short supply.

The government was egged on by several sections to approach the central government to help out the state government.

However the government kept on fumbling.

All these decades the state government has been depending the vagaries of the Nature since there is no dependable alternative source of water for the people in the state.

Storm damages houses Ucheckon Nongpok Gram Panchayat stated that many houses, crops, trees and other properties were destroyed by the storm and hail on Sunday.

According to a statement issued by the Ucheckon Nongpok GP I/E II Pradhan, Anita Naoroibam a strong storm and hailstorm have not only rendered the people homeless but also destroyed many crops in the areas.

She appealed to the Government to give assistance to the victimised families.
