Imphal, October 03 2012:
Expressing deep concern at the 'violent exchange between political groups' in Tamenglong district on October 2 afternoon in which a civilian namely Jakailung Gangmei was killed, United Naga Council (UNC) said recurrence of violence particularly in populated areas has come as a rude shock and has caused widespread insecurity and panic among the civil populace of the area.
The movement for reconciliation among the Naga political groups initiated by the Forum for Naga Reconciliation has been making much progress with the blessing and endorsement of the Naga people, said a UNC statement.
Side by side the negotiation on the Naga political issue is said to have reached an advanced stage.
"Therefore we fervently appeal to the parties concerned to discard confrontationist positions and to make use of the space for dialogue and communication as violence will only complicate and aggravate the situation," said UNC.
While acknowledging the Zeliangrong civil society organizations and Churches for their unceasing efforts towards reconciliation and peace, we also appeal to the general public of the area for reason and good sense in handling the highly vitiated situation so that peace and goodwill among the Naga brethren is restored at the earliest, maintained the statement while conveying solidarity to the suffering of the victim's family.
