With the election of the president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee coming closer, differences among party workers have started to emerge.
The election of the MPCC president is scheduled to be held on September 17 even as the election to the post of president of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) was held today in New Delhi.
Sonia Gandhi was elected president for the fourth consecutive time.
She was unopposed.
As per notification issued by Oscar Fernandes on August 26, 2010, willing candidates for the post of the state party president could file their nomination paper for candidature on September 12 and 13. Scrutiny will be done the next day and the last date of withdrawal of candidature will be September 15. he election will be held on September 17. The differences among the workers of the state congress has surfaced even as party leaders and workers are celebrating the election of Sonia Gandhi as congress president unopposed for a fourth time in New Delhi today.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today, L Manglem, a member of the election committee appointed by the AICC revealed that there was a strong possibility of holding election for the post of president of MPCC.
Even though there were talks that Gaikhangam is likely to retain the seat, so far there is no specific instruction to the party leaders or workers to ensure he retains the seat.
At the same time, most of the workers would like to hold an election to elect a person of their choice from among contesting candidates, he said.
They had also expressed confidence that central leaders will not intervene in the election of a person congress workers here want.
Workers seem to desire a new face for the post, Manglem observed.
He further informed that the elections of presidents of block and district level committees of the party have already been completed.
A total of 74 persons had been elected as PCC members.
In the elections to MPCC president, there were 75 electorates.
After the president�s election is held, election of the vice-president is to be conducted, he added.
The party is all set for the election of the MPCC president.
Returning Officer of the election from the AICC is likely to visit Imphal on September 7.During his visit, the PRO of the party election, Selvious Condopal, will hand over the charge of election to the MPCC election authority with its members L Manglem, A Pramodini, AS Shangam and M Ranjit.
The press briefing held today was also attended by the elected PCC members elected Ngamthang Haokip, Jotin, Radhakishore, Maniruddin Sheikh, Jogamlhun, A Pramodini, AS Shangam, M Ranjit and L.Manglem.
With regard to the contenders of the post of the MPCC President, it is learnt that some PCC members are supporting the candidature of MLA, E Dwijamani who is also the chairman of the Manipur Pollution Control Board.
Out of 14 presidents of District Pradesh Committee 11 are in favour of Dwijamani, a source close to the party said.
But other sources said that with election to the State Assembly coming close, Gaikhangam is most likely to be re-elected as president.
The matter of electing the party chief is likely to be settled after the Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh and seating president Gaikhangam currently in New Delhi arrive here, sources added.
