Imphal, September 21 2011:
The 12-hour State wide general strike called by Maoist Communist Party, Manipur to protest against arbitrary arrest and detention of assistant publicity secretary of proscribed RPF GM Changjou alias Gypsy alias Gurumayum Jiteshwar Sharma concluded peacefully with no reports of any untoward incidents from any part of the State.
However, owing to the general strike, normal life in Manipur came to a grinding halt.
During the course of the general strike which came into effect from 5 am to 5 pm today, all the market places and business establishments including Khwairamband Bazar remained shut down and inter-district transport services stayed off the road.
Schools and colleges also remained close for the day on account of the strike.
Attendance in Govt offices also reported to be thin.
Although there is no report of any untoward incident, womenfolk came out in large number to participate in protest demonstration at different parts demanding disclosure of whereabouts of GM Changjou.
Whereabouts of GM Changjou has remained unknown after his arrest by Indian Army from a house in Dimapur on Aug 18 night last.
