To protest extra-judicial killing of Thangjam Manorama Devi by personnel of 17 Assam Rifles, a mass protest rally would be taken out on August 2 at Barak Valley.
The rally is being organized jointly by Barak Valley Meitei Convention and All Assam Manipuri Women Meira Paibi Co-ordination Committee, Lakhipur sub-division, Cachar.
The decision for organizing the protest rally was taken during a joint meeting of the Convention and the Co-ordinating Committee held yesterday.
The meeting strongly condemned the excesses being committed by security personnel on the people of North East in general and Manipur in particular under the immunity granted by Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958.Those who spoke at the meeting strongly contended that imposition of such repressive Act does not served the purpose of containing law and order situation.
On the contrary, it aggravated the situation with rampant incidents of human rights violation by the security personnel.
Meanwhile, Kangleipak Asida Nganna Leihouragadaba Ariba Sindamsang Asuppa, Wakha, Ching-Tam Apunba Sheishak Lup, Paona Bazar; Communist Party of India, Heing- ang Local Council; etc, while condemning killing of Manorama in the custody of 17 Assam Rifles personnel, have also flayed the Govt for using repressive measures to curb public movement against atrocities committed by security personnel on the people of Manipur.
