Imphal, November 27 2016:
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has approved the proposal to declare Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) as a World Heritage Site.
Notably, KLNP is a floating park which is the only natural habitat of the endangered Sangai.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) PN Prasad told The Sangai Express that the proposal was approved a few days back and KLNP was included in a tentative list of the UNESCO.
This was informed to the State Forest Department by the Wild Life Institute of India.
KLNP, if declared as a World Heritage Site, would be listed in the mixed category.
The process of declaring KLNP as a World Heritage Site may be completed by 2018.Noted environmentalist Dr Kh Shamungou remarked that declaration of KLNP as a World Heritage Site would go a long way towards conservation of both Sangai and the park apart from augmenting the State's economy.
