Imphal, June 27 2020:
The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has reiterated its demand to install Effluent Treatment Plan (ETP) and incinerator in all the Government as well as private hospitals in the State.
DESAM, in a statement said, even though JNIMS has been declared as COVID Care Hospital, the incinerator at the hospital is not functioning properly.
Medical wastes of the hospital are being burnt in an open space inside the hospital's campus, DESAM claimed while questioning the Manipur Pollution Control Board whether it is ok to burn medical waste in any open space.
DESAM said, according to experts, a 150 bedded hospital produces 15,000 to 20,000 litres of liquid bio medical waste.
However, there is no Effluent Treatment Plan to treat liquid waste in any of the hospitals in the State, which is very alarming, it said.
There are only three incinerators in the State and the ones at RIMS and JNIMS are not functioning properly while the one at Shija Hospital being of a small capacity cannot handle the load, said the student body.
DESAM had raised this issue June 13 however, there is no action taken report so far, it said.
DESAM will further take the matter to the National Green Tribunal, it added.
