Convict sentenced

Th Simon, Session Judge Thoubal, sentenced one Sagolsem Suranjoy and Konjengbam Nillakomol, to 8 years in jail in connection with death of one Naorem Sanahal on October 5, 2004, at Wangjing Khunou.
The sentence was announced today after the sentence hearing against the convicts, who were convicted by the same Court on May 13, 2009.The convicts were produced before the Court from Sajiwa Central Jail today and during the sentence hearing, the Court heard the submission of A Gopendro Sharma Additional PP, Advocate L Rebika (counsel of the victim) and Advocate Romola Devi, counsel of the convicts.
The Additional PP submitted that Sagolsem Suranjoy (42) s/o (L) Sh Heramot of Wangjing Khonou and Konjenbam Nillakomol (30) s/o (L) Ibomcha of Ithai Warukok, were convicted for the death of Naorem Sanahal who was hit on the head with a "Sahi Matup" and added that the crime committed by convicts is serious and thus prayed for maximum punishment along with a fine.
On the other hand, the defense counsel prayed for awarding the least punishment to the convicts as the incident was sudden and the convicts had no intention to cause such serious bodily injuries to the deceased.
The defense counsel then stated that Sagolsem Suranjoy is suffering from paralysis and produced a medical paper before the Court.
The defense counsel also submitted that Konjenbam Nillakomol is the sole bread earner of his family which consists of his wife and three children.
After the hearing the submission of both parties, the Court sentenced Sagolsem Suranjoy and Konjenbam Nillakomol to 8 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each.
In default of payment of the fine, the convicts will undergo another 6 months imprisonment, the order mentioned.
The Court further recommended compensation of not less than Rs 5 lakh under NALSA to the victim's wife.
It also directed SP Sajiwa Central Jail to provide proper medical treatment to Sagolsem Suranjoy during his sentence in the jail.
It may be mentioned that the case began against the convicts after one of the family members of the deceased, lodged a complaint before Sugnu PS on October 5, 2004, stating that the same day, at around 12.30 pm, Naorem Sanahal s/o (L) Leishang of Wangjing Khunou was assaulted with deadly weapons at Wangjing Khunou by the convicts and as a result of the assault, he sustained grievous injuries on his head rendering him unconscious.
He was evacuated to RIMS hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries, the complaint mentioned.
