Imphal, December 24 2012:
Taking serious note of the unfolding situation in the State, the All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) has appealed to all the people to remain calm and work collectively so as to avert any untoward incident.
Speaking to media persons at Langol Tarung this afternoon, AMCO treasurer Pastor Phungmi Mawon said that they condemned both the incidents of molesting a film actress by one NSCN-IM cadre at Chandel and subsequent killing of journalist Dwijamani in police firing.
But AMCO would like to appeal to all the communities not to lead the ongoing agitation in the direction of communal confrontation.
It is unfortunate that the agitation has not only vitiated the spirit of Christmas but also some elements appeared to be trying to draw a line on religious line.
The Pastor also appealed against impounding articles and belongings from travellers apart from blocking roads.
Pastor Rev L Timothy Phaomei of Rongmei Naga Baptist Church (RNBA) Centre Church called upon all to shed every tendency of violence and destruction.
He also suggested alternative protest movements like boycotting the Government and its machinery in place of the all paralysing general strike.
Besides being an act of violating human rights, general strike itself is not acceptable to God.
Some bandh supporters have been acting and speaking in such a manner which is not permissible at all.
"There is no point in hurling abuses against ourselves", Pastor Phaomei said.
He appealed to people of both the hills and valley to give up the habit of calling general strikes.
Strongly condemning the act of molesting a film actress and killing a journalist, he demanded befitting punishment to all those found guilty.
Rongmei Women Union president Panti Golmei while condemning Livingstone's crime as well as the killing of Dwijamani, appealed to all concerned to call off the general strike in the interest of stranded people.
Public outroar was imminent in the hills during the rape case of Jangthailiu but Rongmei Women Union worked to avoid such a situation, Panti said while appealing to the valley based organisations to work towards mollifying the current situation.
Goods more than Rs one crore including documents were set ablaze at Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai yesterday.
In addition, many people sustained injuries.
Given the prevailing situation, many people are still caught in a panicky situation, she conveyed.
