Imphal, February 22 2021:
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has denounced the 'excessive force' of the State police in controlling the protesting students of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU), today.
Addressing a press meet at its headquarters, Bruce Pebam, secretary of Human Resource Development (HRD) AMSU, stated that Government not paying attention to the cease work strike of the college teachers demanding 7th Pay is rather unfortunate as the situation has adversely impacted on the academic pursuit of the students.
The students resorted to agitation as the teachers' protest is disturbing their academic lives, which is already overwhelmed by the Covid pandemic, he added.
Bruce asserted that AMSU will not accept using such 'brute force' against students protesting democratically, and added that students are now at the receiving end of the 7th Pay issue.
Victimising students by the contention between college teachers and the Government is unreasonable, he asserted .
Bruce also appealed to the protesting teachers to drop their cease work strike and use alternative means in pressing their demand to the Government.
The situation of higher education in Manipur is distressing and students here seem to be deprived of rights to education, he said and added that AMSU will support all the initiatives taken by the college students demanding resumption of classes.
Bruce appealed to the State Government and authority concerned to intervene and make sure classes are resumed in colleges.
