General strike throws life out of gear

Imphal, November 21 2017:
President of India Ram Nath Kovind arrived here today amidst the general strike called by CorCom, a conglomerate of different militant groups, even as normal activity was paralysed by the general strike in the State.
President Ram Nath Kovind, accompanied by the first lady Savita Kovind, who arrived under heavy security cover inaugurated the first ever North East Development Summit and annual State's Sangai Festival today.
Imphal City and adjoining areas wore a deserted look with shops and all kinds of business establishments shutting down shutter due to the general strike from 5 am of November 21 till 8 am of November 22 to boycott the President's visit.
Inter-States, Inter-districts and local buses stayed off the road.
However, few private vehicles were seen sparsely moving on the roads.
Schools and all educational institutions remained closed and attendance at Government offices was recorded to be very thin.
Cinema halls, petrol pumps were also closed owing to the general strike.
However, there was no effect to the flight service in the State although many flight schedules were said to be delayed due to the landing of the plane carrying the President.
Tight security measures have been taken up in Imphal to thwart any unwanted incident.
Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF and State Forces personnel have been deployed in and around Imphal.
Metal detectors and sniffer dogs were also used in many areas as pre-emptive measures.
