Imphal, November 21 2012:
Awang Sekmai-based Advance Women Society has expressed strong opposition against the reported move of the Government to shift Special Category Residential School, Awang Sekmai to Uripok.
Speaking to newspersons at Manipur Press Club today, Society secretary Khuraijam Amubi Devi informed that the Special Category School was established on October 1, 2011 under a specific programme of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and present has about 100 students.
Further maintaining that till date the school was functioning through attachment to Ch Tula Singh Junior High School, she described alleged move of the Government to shift from Sekmai as unwarranted and unjustifiable.
Appealing to authorities concerned to scrap the school shifting move, if any, Amubi pointed out that in Imphal areas there are a number of reputed educational institutions where the students can study unlike in a rural place such as Sekmai where students are deprived of quality education.
Quoting the Imphal West Deputy Commissioner as saying, during a recent visit, that the Special Category Residential School at Sekmai is not only located at a suitable site but has tremendous prospect of further development, she said in case the said school is shifted to Tondonsana High School, Uripok campus it would amount to denying rights to education of the Sekmai students.
Pointing out that a similar educational (SCRS) institution was also set up at Wangoi to cater to the educational need of the students there, the Society secretary also informed that the Sekmai institution has students from various other places/districts.
Moreover, if there is no positive response to the Society's appeal for maintaining status quo of the School various forms of agitation would be launched against the Government.
