International Mother Language Day celebrated

The International Mother Language Day was celebrated across the world today.
In view of this occasion, different organisations/institutes too celebrated the day in different parts of the State.
Directorate of Language Planning & Implementation celebrated the day at Manipur Press Club today.
Professor of Linguistics, Department of Linguistics Manipur University, Dr N Pramodini and Director, Language Planning & Implementation, Dr L Mahabir attended the celebration as dignitaries.
Dr L Mahabir, speaking about the celebration, said that many writers/ authors/poets are holding seminars and organising Kabi Samelan to mark the observation.
He stated that, now-a-days, people are speaking their own mother language less while many are likely to forget it and the day is celebrated to promote, protect and speak more of one's own mother language.
A seminar moderated by Former HoD, Manipur DMC Arts, Dr Th Ibohanbi along with a poetry recitation was held as part of the event.
On the other hand, Manipuri Literary Society Imphal organised 'Malemgi oiba Emalolgi numit' (International Mother Language Day) at Manipur Hindi Parishad hall, Assembly road today.
Manipuri Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi New Delhi convenor Nongmaithem Kirankumar attended the observation as the chief guest while Manipuri Literary Society Imphal president Samurailatpam Prahlad Sharma as president.
Sahitya Akademi Translation prize winner RK Mobi was felicitated as part of the ceremony.
Advocate Dr Chongtham Narendra delivered a lecture on "Sahitya amasung Leingakki Chatna Pathap".
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Kirankumar lauded the Manipuri Literary Society for organising the event as part of the celebration across the world.
He appealed all to protect and promote Manipuri language adding that protecting one's language will progress the pace of development of the community in general and the State as whole.
Meanwhile, the day was also observed by Sahitya Thoupang Lup and Kabui Dharma Sabha at Kokadan village, Churachandpur district.
Kokadan village chief D Namshachung Kabui while delivering his presidential speech, said that the present and new generation are speaking less in their mother tongue.
He maintained that speaking some someone's else's language and forgetting one's own will be able to identify the person and his roots.
Maintaining that the people are educated yet not disciplined, he appealed all the elder people to teach the young minds about history, culture, tradition and language.
Language activist Leihaothabam Saratchandra Sharma, who attended the event as chief guest, underlined the need for development of all mother languages in the State.
Saratchand Thiyam and D Lungpuijei delivered a lecture on 'Haujik oiriba Manipuri lolgi fibam' and 'Kabui lolgi fibam' respectively.
