Legal literacy awareness prog held at Kwatha

Imphal, May 20 2012:
A one day legal literacy and awareness programme organized by District Legal Services Authority in collaboration with Human Rights Initiative, Manipur and Kwatha People's Welfare Organisation was held at Kwatha Community Hall today.
Speaking on the occasion, Salam Imocha, Additional District and Session Judge, Manipur West recalled that earlier the strength of a country was measured by the number of soldiers in the country.
But today, the strength of a country is measured by the level of education imparted to the people.
As such, the welfare and development of a state depends on the education system of that state.
He noted that Constitution of India guarantees freedom of speech and settlement to all its citizen.
However, the Constitution prohibits an individual from speaking against the interest of a particular community which could evoke hatred among different communities settling in the state.
Imocha stated that there are certain Acts like the Indian Panel Code which prohibits an individual from violating a law of the state and an individual can be punished if he or she is found indulging in anti social activities disturbing the internal security of the state.
Stressing on right of equality among the male and the female members of the society, the Additional District and Session Judge explained that woman can fight for justice if she feels that she is a victim of domestic violence.
She can also claim her property rights from her parents, in-laws or her husband.
The programme was graced by Kimneineing Shoute, Chief Judicial Megistrate of Chandel District and Ningthoujam Kamal, Village Chief of Kwatha as Chief Guest and President respectively.
