Imphal, December 18 2014:
Sharing the grief of the bereaved families of the two persons who lost their lives in traditional water immersion over a dispute, the Zeliangrong Baudi, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland (ZB, AMN) has vehemently deplored the fateful incident of the traditional water emersion judgement (Dui Kei-Maidenghmei) over a land dispute and the Khullakpa of Gahtao (Satu) village of Khoupum subdivision, Tamenglong district, Manipur on Friday, December 12 .
Dr Gairiangmei Maringmei, general secretary, ZB (AMN) in a statement demanded that the District Administrator of Tamenglong be pulled up for ordering the water ordeal judgement for justice.
Series of case hearing had been carried out at the office of DC, Tamenglong on the said dispute, but it failed to deliver justice.
Finally, one way of traditional method, the trial of traditional water emersion judgement for justice was adopted and conducted on December 12 that took the precious lives of Singlanglung Gangmei S/o (L) Khoiruilung Gangmei and Kalanjin Gangmei alias Kadeikhao Gangmei, S/o (L) Gaimakulungpou of Gahtao (Satu) village of Khoupum, the statement issued by ZB (AMN) said.
The District and Sub-Divisional Magistrates with police including many village authorities of Khoupum areas glorified the old time/outdated system of conducting trial for justice.
This is very unbecoming on the part of the modern day judiciary systemsaid ZB and added that the practice of the past should have been abandoned.
The ancient way of judgement was necessitated for want of legal awareness but the present generation cannot imagine adopting such a method when all are well equipped with the knowledge of the laws of the land.
The old method entails the undesirable and unhealthy elements, it said.
