'State students facing hostile situation at MSU'

Joint Students' Coordination Committee (JSCC) has drawn the attention of the State Government to look into the situation of Manipuri students studying at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Vadodara in Gujarat as they are not willing to go outside from their rents and hostels following a brawl that broke out between them and Rajasthani students.
Addressing a press meet held at AMSU Headquarter inside DM College campus today, JSCC convenor Ng Milan said that a heated argument between Manipuri students and Rajasthani students studying in the university led to an ugly clash.
He urged the State Government to bring an amicable solution to the unfortunate incident at the earliest so that the Manipuri students could study properly and peacefully in the university.
He said that Manipuri students studying in the university are feeling insecure following the clash between the two student groups that took place in the university hostel.
He mentioned that the brawl broke out over an alleged racial slur on the Manipuri students by the Rajasthani students on the intervening night of March 1 and 2.He contended that the university authority including its Vice-Chancellor and Registrar made charges against the Manipuri students only and the police handled the case in a biased manner by filing an FIR against six Manipuri students involved in the case.
The students from Rajasthan involved in the same case were left scot free, he claimed.
He also claimed that the Rajasthani students keep on searching the Manipuri students in what could be termed as repeated attempts to attack the students from the State.
Milan who is also the president of Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) appealed to Chief Minister N Biren to intervene into the matter and hold talks with the Gujarat counterpart to reach an amicable solution at the earliest.
He said that the incident occurred amidst the growing racial discrimination against the people of North East region in mainland India.
Attending the press meet, JSCC co-convenor Manjit Saranghtem who is also the president of All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) said that mainland India continues to suppress and racially discriminate students from the North East.
He said that the racial discrimination and atrocities against the people of North East region in mainland India have been continuing despite staging various forms of protest.
He observed that it is high time for the Chief Ministers, MPs and influential people of the North East to stood up against the rampant atrocities meted out against the people of the region and raise strong voice to deliver justice.
Urging the State Government to hold talk with his Gujarat counterpart to settle the matter, he warned that JSCC will take up different modes of agitation if the Government fails to do the needful by March 18.He added that a memorandum pressing the demand will be submitted to the Chief Minister today.
