Imphal, October 15 2015 :
CAF & PD Labours Welfare Association has urged the State Government to instruct the labour contractor of CAF & PD godown to clear the due wages of the labourers.
Speaking at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, association secretary Romendrajit Moirangcha said that after a long standoff, the association inked a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the labour contractor, RK Fortune Developers Pvt Ltd at the office of United Committee, Manipur with the then Deputy Labour Commissioner, Government of Manipur as the witness on January 25 this year.
As the labour contractor failed to abide by the points mentioned in the MoA, the association submitted a charter of demands to the authority concerned on May 7 this year.
Later, the association urged the Government to take up disciplinary action against the labour contractor for the alleged misdeeds including non-clearance of labour wages amounting to around Rs 30 lakhs through the media on June 12 this year, Romendrajit said.
However, instead of clearing the due wages, the labour contractor asked the labourers to issue a clarification on the allegations published in the media, he said.
Romendrajit alleged that the work contractor has been trying to suppress the issue by recruiting new labourers at the CAF & PD godown.
He said that CAF & PD Labours Welfare Association was established in 2004 with an aim to promote work culture in the State.
However, the Government appointed labour contractor has been demoralising the labourers, he said and added that this policy is tantamount to putting in effort to hand over labour works of the godown to migrant workers.
Stating that this repressive policy of the work contractor would instigate labourers' agitation, Romendrajit urged the State Government to immediately look into the matter.
