Governor launches Clean Loktak Initiative

Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has launched Clean Loktak Initiative at Darbar Hall, Raj Bhavan today.
Launching the initiative to clean Manipur's pride the Loktak Lake, the Governor said it is a matter of grave concern that the biggest fresh water lake in the North East India is deteriorating day by day.
As a matter of fact the lake is engulfed by a huge biomass � the Phumdi and also polluted with waste materials, she said and added that it is time to take stringent measures to curb the deterioration.
Dr Heptulla while appealing all the stakeholders to spread awareness among the people to conserve the natural beauty and different habitations in the lake, also advocated to infuse knowledge especially to the younger generations about the lake and its necessity for a healthy livelihood.
If the younger generation is involved in the movement to save the lake, it will be a great achievement, she added.
Professor Dinabandhu Sahoo, Director of Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development who was present at the occasion stressed on the need to introduce scientific methods to conserve Loktak Lake and its flora and fauna.
An interactive session was also held on the issue wherein heads of institutions and teachers from across the State and resource persons from different agencies of the both the State and Central Governments participated.
The Governor also emphasised on the need to spread awareness to the younger generation especially students on the conservation of Loktake Lake.
She appealed to all to maintain the lake which serves as the source of livelihood of many people.
In connection with the initiative, a power point presentation was also presented by L Bhagaton, Project Director, Loktak Development Authority during the session.
