Imphal, December 11 2021:
An ad-hoc committee named the Indigenous People's Alliance (IPA) has been formed with members comprising repre-sentatives from across the State with the sole objective of updating the NRC.
The formation of IPA was informed by its secretary Longjam Abothe Meitei at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club today.
Abothe said that the ad-hoc committee was formed as per a resolution taken at a public meeting organized by the Co-ordination Committee on Indigenous Peo- ple at Tangkhul Avenue community hall on December 4.He added that there is an ever increasing demographic imbalance in the State as a result of a surge in the population growth of non-locals.
This has necessitated updation of the NRC to aid in protecting the indigenous people of the State, he told the media.
Adding that the Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) is only able to detect and control non-locals entering into the State, he said that those who had been in the State before the implementation of the ILPS and had their names included in the electoral roll are left unchecked.
The newly constituted ad-hoc committee will work to ensure that the demographic imbalance in the State, both in the hills and the valley areas, are eliminated in order to protect the indigenous people of the State, Longjam Abothe informed.
He added that the IPA will urge the political parties to include updation of the NRC in their election manifestos.
