Imphal, June 08 2018:
Owing to the decrease in the number of MBBS seats for the country, it is speculated that the State of Manipur may not get the same MBBS seats from the Central pool as it used to last year.
It may be mentioned that the number of MBBS seats in the country decreased due to the recent decision of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to cancel the affiliation of around 82 medical colleges of the country.
Out of the said 82 medical colleges, 12 are Government owned colleges.
Last year, Manipur received six MBBS seats from the Central pool.
However, it is believed that Manipur will not be getting any such facility this year, the main reason being that the Central pool is aimed more towards States which have no medical colleges as well as the sharp decrease in the number of MBBS seats for the whole country following the cancellation of the affiliation of 82 medical colleges.
According to an official source from Directorate of Health Services Manipur, it is still unclear whether the State will receive any MBBS seats from the Central pool.
The source however clarified that the MBBS seats at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) will remain the same.
Last year, Manipur had 121 MBBS seats, out of which 30 belonged to RIMS which is operating under the Health Ministry, 85 to the State owned JNIMS while the remaining 6 belonged to the Central pool, the source explained.
The source informed that the current number of MBBS seats at JNIMS is 100, out of which 25 are given to the Central pool while the remaining 85 are reserved for the State.
Claiming that the State Government is working towards increasing the number of seats from the current 100 to 150 seats, the source added that the MCI has given the green signal to the plan as well.
Lack of infrastructure has been holding back the plan to increase the number of seats.
However, the seat number will be increased by next year, the source added.
The source informed that this year's National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) was declared on June 4 and added that on Sunday, June 10, select staff of the Directorate will go and bring a separate list for Manipur from CBSE.
