Special Judge ND&PS Manipur sentenced a convicted couple, from whose possession a huge quantity of banned drug items were seized on May 4 last year, to undergo 12 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
The quantum of punishment was announced after the sentence hearing today.
The couple was convicted by the same Court on November 27 last.
Convict Sougaijam Robindro (30), S/o S Ibotombi of Kakching Wairi Thongam Leikai, at present staying at Moreh Supermarket Ward number 2 and his wife Lalrozami Duhlian were produced before the Court from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa and Manipur Central Jail Imphal respectively.
The Court directed the Jail authority to provide adequate care to convict Lalrozami Duhlian since she is pregnant.
The Court also mentioned that the fine imposed on the couple should be paid within 6 months.
The Court after hearing both the Special PP and the defence counsel sentenced Lalrozami Duhlian to undergo 7 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50 thousand for the offence under section 21 (b) of ND&PS Act and 12 years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1 lakh for the offence under Section 22( c) of the ND&PS Act.
The punishment against the convict Lalrozami Duhlian is to run concurrently.
The Court further sentenced S Robindro to undergo 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine Rs 1 lakh for the offence.
On the other hand, the Court directed to refund Rs 1,13,150 to the convicts within one-month as convincing evidence could not be found to prove that the amount (Rs 1,13,150) seized from the possession of Lalrozami Duhlian was sale proceeds of the illegal drugs.
It may be mentioned that the convicted couple was arrested by a combined team of NAB Manipur and Tengnoupal police along with 5,200 WY tablets, 100 grams of heroin powder, 28,801 Kyat (Burmese currency), Rs 1,13,150 in Indian currency, a Hyundai Creta, 10 Mobile phones, 3 bank passbooks, 2 bank cheque books, 2 ATM cards and several incriminating documents from their possession on May 4 last year.
