Rains trigger massive landslides at Mokokchung in Nagaland

Heavy rains have triggered massive landslides in several parts of Nagaland causing road blockades and disrupting smooth movement of traffic along the National/state highways while some roads have been restored.
In Mokokchung, a massive landslide near Unger village along NH-2 has paralyzed all vehicular movement.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mokokchung, Sushil Kumar Patel told Nagaland Post that the district administration had already instructed the officers concerned from the National Highway Division to take up restoration work at the earliest.
While informing that two excavators (JCB) were already on the spot to clear the debris, the Deputy Commissioner however said movement of vehicles would made be possible only by Tuesday, depending on the weather conditions.
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer (EE) NH, Mokokchung division Er.
Chubatoshi said Monday's landslide occurred at the same spot, which took place in 2015.Er.
Chubatoshi assured that the department has put in all efforts to restore the road at the earliest .
In Wokha, the District Disaster Management Agency (DDMA) has cleared massive landslide on Wokha-Merapani road that occurred in the wee hours of Monday some 10 kms from Wokha.
The landslide blocked all traffic along the Wokha-Merapani State highway, the district's lifeline.
Since June-July this year, as many as 72 landslides (53 major and 19 minor) have occurred in many places in Wokha district.
As a result, many man-hours and days have been wasted and economic transactions lost in terms of crores of rupees.
Wokha-Merapani State highway has been hit the hardest with 21 major landslides occurring along the highway till date.
Correspondingly, the Wokha-Doyang road along NH-2 has also witnessed 16 major landslides occurring within the same time period.
Wokha-Bokajan road, another important road of the district, has also been hit with eight major and four minor landslides.
Other landslides occurring along other roads in the district include: Chukitong-Tsungiki Bye Pass road (2 major landlsides); Wokha-N.Longidang road (1 major and 1 minor landslide); Mt.
Tiyi road along Wokha-Bokajan road, Etsutchukha Colony road, Wozhuro road, Lakhuti-Aitepyong road, and Chukitong-Seluku road (1 major lanslide each); and Longtsung, Lotsu, Moilan area roads (14 minor landslides).
District Disaster Management Agency Wokha sources told Nagaland Post that all affected roads were cleared through funds received from Nagaland State Disaster Management Agency (NSDMA).
DDMA Wokha has further expressed gratitude to NSDMA for providing funds, and the PWD (R&B) Wokha and Baghty divisions for coordinating the road clearance works.
