Centre approves separate High Court for state in-principle
High Court, Imphal Bench to shift to Chingmeirong today

Even as the state government, the High Court Bar Association and different organizations have pressed for establishment of a separate High Court in the state, the Central government has agreed in-principle to setting up one.
According to an official source, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has already expressed hope that Central Government would give its green signal to setting up of a separate High Court for the state once the ongoing construction work on the High Court complex at Chingmeirong is completed.
As such there is certainty that Manipur would have a separate High Court latest by this year.
The source further revealed that Chief Minsiter O Ibobi would be writing a written to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for taking a favourable decision in this regard.
It is said that Tripura has also demanded establishment of a separate High Court.
Construction work on the new High Court complexes are being carried out under central funding.
The Union Cabinet is most likely to take the decision of granting the permission to establish a separate High Court in both the states.
The issue is all set to be brought up during the Union cabinet's meeting, the source added.
The Court Complex at Chingmeirong has been constructed taking into consideration of possibilities over setting up of a separate High Court for Manipur.
Meanwhile, according to information received by Hueiyen Lanpao, the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench would be shifted to the newly constructed Court Complex at Chingmeirong tomorrow.
Justice Altamas Kabir, Justice, Supreme Court of India arrived at Imphal today to take part in the ceremony of shifting the Imphal Bench of Gauhati High Court to the newly constructed court complex at Chingmeirong.
Chief Justices from around 15 High Courts have also already arrived at Imphal for the ceremony.
Among them include Gyan Sudha Mishra, Judge, Supreme Court of India; AK Goel, Chief Justice, Gauhati High Court; Madan B Lokur, Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court and Manjula Chelur, Chief Justice of KeralaHigh Court.
The ceremony would commenced at around 11.55 am and would be attended by Chief Minister O Ibobi, Law and Legislative Affairs Minister Th Devendra and other renowned persons.
