Consultation program on child rights held

With the theme 'Delivering Justice to Rape Victims, a one-day consultation on child rights and juvenile justice was held today at MVHA Hall, Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal under the aegis of Child Welfare Committee, Imphal East.
Giving the keynote address, Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, Imphal East, K Pradipkumar said even though persons accused of rape were arrested with the help of FIR, incident of punishment against the accused persons are still nought.
He also highlighted several provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.
Speaking as the chief guest, member secretary of Manipur Legal Services Authority, A Guneshwar said the enforcement of the JJA is a positive step towards the protection of child rights.
He also lauded the provisions under the Act which prohibited the publication of identities of rape and other atrocities victims while stressing on the need to appoint a lady officer at each police station.
Senior Advocate, Kh Mani Singh lamented the fading away of law in the State.
Though the State is said to be a democratic one, there is no meaning of democratic principles is evident in the State.
Advocate Kh Mani also strongly advocated to make the legal proceedings in regard to rape less complicated.
On mob justice, the Advocate said that committing another crime against a crime (dismantling or burning down the houses or property of accused by the mob) would delay delivery of justice.
Resource persons of the technical session included A Guneshwar Sharma, member secretary, MSLA; Joykumar Wahengbam, member, CWC, Imphal East; A Mobi, president of AMWJU and L Pishak, chairperson of CWC, Bishnupur.
The programme was also attended by Ashem Gosh, an activist of Child Rights for Youth.
