Meet on environment stresses on role of youths

Along with emphasising on active participation of youths in the campaign for protecting the environment, speakers at an environment-related event strongly advocated extensive awareness programme on promoting hygienic lifestyle.
In his address as the chief guest during the inaugural function of the two-day 2nd Enviro Youth Summit today, noted environmentalist and former Manipur University Registrar RK Ranjan highlighted that Manipur cannot remain secluded from the impact of global climatic change.
As the people of Manipur are also destined to face consequences of ongoing rapid deterioration in the ecological condition every citizen need to contribute their mite towards conservation of the environment before it is too late, cautioned the chief guest.
Pointing out that environmental condition familiar to the people of Manipur a few decades back has undergone drastic change and conceding that it would be futile to hope for re-invigoration to the friendly ecological condition of the past, Dr Ranjan suggested that along with vigorous tree plantation programmes awareness campaigns need to be carried out to inform the common citizens on the threat posed to human by random disposal of household wastes.
In a similar vein, former principal of DM College of Science Gurumayum Tomba sharma said every citizen should ensure that no further pollution is caused to the environment.
Reminding that random dumping of wastes is one of the chief factors for environmental pollution that would eventually endanger survival of mankind on the Earth, he stressed on concerted awareness campaigns and replenishing the green cover as some of the means for sustaining livelihood on this planet.
Among others, National Teacher (CBSE) awardee Salam Anilkumar and founder cum managing trustee of event hosts North East Centre for Environmental Education and Research, Imphal Kh Jibankumar also deliberated on related issues.
The first day of the event also had painting competition, symposium and short story writing contest for students as well as discussion/interaction programmes.
