Senapati, May 03 2016:
Much to the relief of the vegetable and fruit sellers especially those from Mao areas who take NH-2 regularly to sell their products in Imphal, the Senapati police from Mao and DHQs have started providing security escorts till Motbung, our correspondent reports.
The arrangements come in the aftermath of the April 19 incident at Keithelmanbi wherein women were physically assaulted and their vehicle hijacked by suspected armed militants for monetary demands, police sources stated.
Routine escort will be provided from Mao till Motbung on Mondays and Fridays to give protection to the travellers and traders journeying to Imphal.
A police officer informed this correspondent that the service was launched to provide safe travelling and avoid repetition of incidents of looting, hijacking, extortion or disturbance along the NH-2.Security patrolling and mobile checking of suspicious vehicles has been beefed up in recent days to instil confidence in the public's mind that the highway is safe and protected by the police and Government forces.
It may be noted that, in the aftermath of the April 19 incident at Keithelmanbi, civil bodies and the public strongly condemned the incident and demanded safety of travellers and women.
SP K Kabib after a meeting with civil bodies based at Senapati instructed all the police stations within the district to beef up security cover along NH-2 even during odd hours and carry out mobile patrolling on regular basis.
