Imphal, May 02 2013:
Opposition parties today urged the State Government to set up Highway Protection Force (HPF) before the onset of rainy season in order to avoid any subversive and criminal activities on NH 37 and NH 2 .
Political parties functioning in the State other than Congress today held a meeting at the office of JD (U) and discussed about the exacerbating situation of Manipur.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Opposition Political Parties Forum Convenor and CPI State Secretary Dr M Nara said that opposition parties condemned all acts of killing drivers and setting ablaze trucks on National Highways who were ferrying essential commodities for the people of Manipur.
The opposition parties have been demanding establishment and deployment of HPF along both Imphal-Jiri-bam highway and Imphal- Dimapur before onset of monsoon season in order to check criminal and violent activities on the two highways.
Blaming the incumbent Government for non-delivery of PDS on time and in adequate quantity, Dr Nara alleged that these essential commodities which are not available through PDS are being sold in the markets at escalated prices.
He lambasted the State Government for its alleged inability to reign in black marketers.
Alleging that the Congress Government is unable to protect life and properties of the people, Dr Nara claimed that the incumbent Government is not enjoying any more legitimacy.
Modesty of women is being outraged every single day and the graph of crime rate has soared to an unprecedented level.
With the State Police unable to track down drug smugglers while its own personnel are also involved in the same illegal practice of smuggling drugs, there is no semblance of governance in the State, Dr Nara asserted.
Opposition parties feel the difficulties being endured by people, they have started a mobilization campaign to launch a mass movement from May 10 against the misplaced policies and failures of the Government, he added.
