Culture varsity to debut with 4 depts

With an aim to preserve the age-old cultures, four departments will be setup in Manipur University of Culture in the first phase, said Manipur University of Culture Vice-Chancellor Naorem Khagendra.
Speaking exclusively to The Sangai Express, Khagendra said that department of dance (Lai Haraoba, Ras Leela, Mao dance and Rong-mei dance), department of painting, department of music (Bhatkhande, Nata Sankirtan and Pena) and department of Thang-Ta would be opened in the first phase.
Syllabus for each department will be made after consulting experts.
The University will also take up required steps in order to set up a department of theatre and department of Shumang Leela by 2017, the Vice-Chancellor said.
Barring appointment of the University Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar by the State Government, the Governor is yet to give his consent to constitute the Executive Council which would comprise of 14 members and Academic Council which would have a total of 21 members, he added.
Manipur State Kala Academy Secretary KRadhakumar said that the State Government has allotted 158.47 acres of khas land at Koutruk and Senj am Khunou for the construction ofUniversity of Culture.
To set up a university where people can learn the cultures of various communities of the State is a very commendable step.
Not only will it provide a platform to leam but also help in conserving the age-old cultures of Manipur, K Radhakumar asserted.
