Thoubal Mayum Mohalla Masjid Committee has made a clarification on the death of a youth who was beaten by a group of people during an anti-drug drive at Thoubal Moijing.
Speaking at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, committee general secretary Sahabuddin said that acting on a tip off committee members along with around 200 locals conducted raids at the houses of Md Naha Ethoi and Md Illias Khan of the locality at around 10 pm on June 29.Although no drug user was found in his house, Illias Khan was beaten by the irate locals as they had reliable informations about sale of drugs, Sahabuddin said.
Later, the locals found around four/five youths injecting heroin number 4 when they got inside Md Naha Ithoi's house, he added.
Although the locals thrashed the youths, they managed to escape from the irate locals, he said.
Later Naha Ithoi and Illias Khan were brought to the Masjid and gave necessary religious advice, Sahabuddin said.
On June 30, he said, they received information about the demise of Md Rahaman of Moijing Chingya Leikai.
Rahaman was one of the youths who managed to escape from the locals on June 29, he said.
However, Rahaman's family had filed a complaint stating that Rahaman was beaten to death by Md Jakaur Rahman, Md Etum and Md Riyaz Khan during the anti-drug drive, Sahabuddin said.
Saying that these three persons did not take part in the drive, Sahabuddin questioned why the trio were targetted by Rahaman's family.
Maintaining that the drive was conducted to save the youth from drug addiction, Sahabuddin said that it was not right to level allegation against the three persons.
