Imphal, June 27 2012:
Citing instances of some auto-rickshaw operators deviating from their permitted route, Khuman Lampak Dingku Road Auto Owners and Drivers' Association has cautioned that fine of Rs 500 amount would be imposed against all the defaulters.
Briefing media persons at Manipur Press Club today, Association general secretary md Sukuruddin informed that 90 autorickshaw operators, who are members of the Association are currently plying in between GM Hall parking to Lamlong Bazar via Dingku Road with the permission from the Manipur State Transport Authority.
claiming that the Association is aware of some non-member auto operators plying on the said route, which he termed as violation of norms, Sukurdin desired that authorities of Transport Department, city police station and Traffic police restrain the rogue elements to prevent ugly confrontation.
While introduction of the semi-low floor passenger bus service from Malom to Lamlong has significantly dented earnings of the Association members, infringement by non-members on the permitted route is further complicating the situation, the secretary maintained.
Accusing Traffic police authorities of not translating assurances, given at an earlier meeting, into action, Sukur-din also charged Transport Department authorities of randomly issuing permits to new passenger carriers inspite of the fact that Imphal area had been facing serious traffic congestion on a daily basis.
Confiding that most of the autorickshaw operators purchased the vehicle with bank loans or by mortgaging standing properties such as homestead land, he fervently appealed to departments concerned to enable authorised operators sustain livelihood.
Besides urging authorities concerned to periodically authenticate whether the auto operators possess valid permit to ply on the Dingku Road, Sukurdin reiterated that fine of Rs 500 would be imposed against the defaulters with immediate effect.
