Imphal, December 23 2014:
The JAC constituted against the death of Huidrom ongbi Tombi (25) of Kakwa Huidrom Leikai has claimed that the young homemaker did not commit suicide but was murdered by her husband.
Speaking at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, a JAC spokesperson said that Tombi married Huidrom Tayai alias Chingkheinganba (28) of Kakwa Huidrom Leikai about five years back.
However, she returned home and stayed at her maternal home and house of her aunt for some time after their marriage as she could not bear the domestic violence allegedly meted out by her husband and mother-in-law, the JAC spokesperson said.
He said that Tayai told the JAC members that the couple had a quarrel on December 19, the day on which Tombi was found hung to death.
The spokesperson said that Tayai told them that Tombi tried to set herself on fire by pouring kerosene all over her body after the quarrel.
However, she went out of their house after Tayai stopped her by snatching the kerosene bottle and match box from her.
The spokesperson added that Tayai also told them that after he stopped Tombi from setting herself on fire, he played video games on his bed as she went outside.
However, after some time, Tombi was found hung to death inside a room, the spokesperson added.
Saying that what Tayai told them is suspicious, the spokesperson claimed that Tombi did not commit suicide but her husband murdered her.
He claimed that Tombi tested positive in pregnancy test that day and she took some money from her husband to buy medicines to terminate her pregnancy.
Another JAC member said that nobody was there in their house when the incident happened and Tombi's body was already on the floor when locals came there.
Moreover, Tayai's family did not inform police about the incident although Singjamei police station is located nearby, he added.
As such, police must thoroughly investigate the incident and punish Tayai befittingly for allegedly hanging his wife after killing her, she added.
Tayai is currently in police custody in connection with the incident.
