Imphal, October 23 2011:
Toupokpi Village Authority has said that it will no longer allow to construct Toupokpi kachcha dam.
In a press release, the village authority said that it has been permitting the dam committee to construct the dam in view of the inadequate irrigation facility faced by the neighbouring villages.
The VA said that it was agreed by the dam committee to pay tax for the construction and take up measures to control land degradation.
However, the works executed by the dam committee/State Government is not satisfactory as village land is washed away every year during rainy season, the press release said.
The VA added that it was agreed on April 21, 2005 by Serou Village Authority, Anal Sinnu Ruwl, Chakpikarong Anal Naga Chiefs Association in the presence of Works Minister K Ranjit to pay yearly tax to Toupokpi VA and compensation to affected land owners until a protective retaining wall is constructed.
It further said the retaining wall which was started construction this year was collapsed before completion as it could hold back the water current.
Now, Toupokpi VA would take the exempted tax and compensation for the years of 2010 and 2011 as there is no more retaining wall.
