Imphal, March 23 2014:
The International Manipuri Mothers' Association (IMMA) today celebrated its 11th foundation anniversary at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace compound with UFO president H Naokhomba and IMMA president Khuman Leima gracing the celebration event as the chief guest and functional president respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Col (Retd) Laishram Lokendro charged Manipur's representatives in the Parliament (MPs) of lacking commitment in exposing misdemeanours against the Manipuri womenfolk at the national capital.
Whenever people of Manipur particularly the women face serious threat to their life or chastity the MPs are found to be slack in responding to the situation, said the former army officer while opining that if a woman is sent to the Parliament there might be swift and positive reaction and make the women and girls working or staying in Delhi feel more safer.
Addressing the gathering as the special guest, social worker Oinam Indira accused the Government of Manipur of taking the people of the State for a ride through false promises.
Noting that during Nupi Lan observances it has become customary for Government representatives to highly acclaim achievement and valour of Manipuri womenfolk, she said lack of commitment to repeal AFSPA 1958 from Manipur inspite of people of Manipur spearheaded by human rights crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila campaigning against the draconian law for the past many years.
Inspite of the fact that almost the entire citizens of Manipur are against any further continuation of the pro-military Act the State Government not initiating necessary procedures to scrapping the Act calls for introspection from every section of the society on the Government's commitment and stand on the issue, she maintained.
Stressing on the need for more women representation in decision making bodies, Indira also exuded confidence that such a move would ensure empowerment of the womenfolk in all spheres of life.
