YFPHR appreciates rescue of minor girl from getting married

Youths’ Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has appreciated the prompt action taken up by the Thoubal District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Thoubal District Child Marriage Prohibition Officer (DCMPO) Reena and her team, Thoubal District Childline Team and Thoubal police to rescue a 12-year-old girl from getting married .
According to a press release of YFPHR, the action was taken up under the direction of Social Welfare Department and Manipur State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights .
The marriage of the child was fixed on October 17 at the residence of the bridegroom somewhere in Thoubal district.
The teams rushed to the residence and enquired about the marriage and asked to produce the girl and the boy .
However, the parents of the boy failed to cooperate with the teams as a result father of the boy was taken to the police station concerned for further query.
At around 10.30 pm the girl child was handed over to the police and the team of DPCO, DCMPO and Childline.
Later the child was produced before the Child Welfare Committee, Thoubal District .
The release said the incident came to light when YFPHR made a written complaint along with sufficient age proof document of the girl child to the Social Welfare Department and Manipur State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights soon after receiving a report from the field urging upon the Departments for their urgent intervention .
After filing the complaint, YFPHR along with Advocate Laimayum Sevananda and Advocate Thounaojam James, the lawyers of the complainant ie the father of the victim rushed to the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thoubal District, A Shanta Devi and submitted a petition to grant an injunction of the marriage of the girl child under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006 .
Responding to the urgency of the case, the Court issued an injunction of the marriage until further order.
The next hearing has been fixed on November 6, the release added.
