Workshop on "Alternative livelihood for people in poppy cultivated areas" held

A one day consultative workshop on alternative livelihood for the people in poppy cultivated areas of Ukhrul District was held on Monday at DRDA training hall under the theme, "Towards a drug-free & sustainable society for all" .
The workshop organised by District Administration Ukhrul was attended by Deputy Commissioner Ukhrul, Krishna Kumar, IAS; Commissioner, Devesh Deval, IAS; Chief Medical Officer Ukhrul, Dr Kapangring A' Shimray; Superintendent of Police Ukhrul, Saujanya Singh and Tangkhul Naga Long vice president, Tuisem Kamkara among others.
Speaking on the occasion, Krishna Kumar highlighted the various welfare schemes initiated by the State and Central Government to support the farmers of the district.
"Farmers should stop cultivating poppies and take up alternative projects that promote healthy living", he added.
Dr Kapangring A' Shimray spoke on the harmful effects of poppy in human beings while Saujanya Singh delivered a lecture on "Legal perspective of poppy cultivation, offences and penalties under NDPS Act 1985" .
According to a report provided by the SP Ukhrul, poppy cultivation has increased to 500% in Ukhrul district over the last couple of years and about 2,341 hectares of land are under poppy cultivation in the district.
Tuisem Kamkara on behalf of the Tangkhul community declared that the community will extend full support in eliminating poppy cultivation from Ukhrul district and to take part in the State Government's "War on Drugs" initiative.
Later, Devesh Deval administered a public pledge against illegal poppy cultivation.
