Thoubal, August 13 2014 :
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Chandel in collaboration with the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hills Region, Imphal organised a Farmer's Field Day on Maize variety -Vijay Composite at Chandonpokpi Village in Chandel District today.
The programme was organised with an objective to encourage the farmers to grow a Vijay Composite, a high yielding variety Maize and the programmed wa graced by IM Singh, Principal Scientist (Seed Technology) ICAR Manipur Centre; Dr Reshikanta Singh, Scientist (Agricultural Economics) ICAR Manipur Centre and N Ingobi Singh, Project Director of Agricultural Technology Manage- ment Agency, Chandel District as the presidium members.
Apart from interaction with the farmers, a field visit was also done where a farm cultivated by a farmer using high variety seeds of Maize distributed earlier by KVK Chandel was visited as a part of the program.
During the programme, agricultural inputs like Arkel, a garden pea variety, white long variety of Radish and Prema and Nasik Red variety of onion, etc.
were also distributed to the participant farmers.
While speaking at the program, IM Singh, Principal scientist said that cultivation of Maize was best suited in the north eastern states including Manipur.
But its production was very low as compare to other countries.
This is because most of the farmers in our country still practiced the traditional methods of cultivation, added IM Singh.
He further said that the food security which we are talking about can be achieved only through new agricultural technology using improved high yielding variety seeds.
A Vijay Composite is also one such high yielding variety seed of maize which can produce 4 times higher than the traditional maize seed.
Moreover, the duration for cultivating such seed is also shorter than the traditional seed, he added.
So, farmers should be encouraged to use such improved seed to increase their productivity and generate more income for their families, said the Principal Scientist.
Dr Rishikanta Singh, Scientist (Agricultural Economics) also said that the role and reaponsible of farmers is indeen very important for achieving agricultural development in our country.
Singh further said that there is no use of producing new improved seeds, if the new seeds were not used by the farmers.
The success of agricultural scientists in producing new seed depends upon the success of the farmers who grows them.
So, agiculture scientists and the farmers should work together to achieve agricultural development in our country, said the Scientist.
P Kabui, Program Co-ordinator of KVK Chandel and TS.
Linda Monsang, Assistant Chief Technical Officer (Plant Breeding) KVK Chandel also attended the program besides 60 farmers including women from Ziontlang, Chandrapoto, Liwa Maring and Chandonpokpi villages.
