Gorkha students decry racial attacks

Imphal, February 12 2014:
Vehemently condemning recent spate of racial attacks against people of North East region in New Delhi, All Manipur Gorkha Students' union (AMGSU) today organised a sit-in-protest at Mantripukhri.
Noting that incidents of mental harassment, physical assault, rape and murder of NE citizens have increased to a large extent in the national capital, Union president Pradeep Rizal said on the sidelines of the protest demonstration that the Government of India should initiate effective measures including framing of anti-racism legislation to tackle racial discrimination.
Cautioning that atrocities being committed against the people of the region is various Indian cities have crossed the limit the tolerance, he reminded that every indian citizens have equal rights and such rights mandated by the Indian constitution should be respected by one and all.
Observing that continuous targeting of NE people have the potential to trigger undesired consequences and sow seeds of communal enmity, the Union president also urged the NE people for maximum restrain.
Stressing that the Government of Manipur take the prevailing situation seriously, Pradeep also said immediate intervention by the State authorities is needed to bring about amicable solution to the problem.
