Imphal, September 08 2013:
Green Revolution Society has kick started its saplings plantation drive at the complexes of Umang Lais (Meitei deities) of Manipur from today.
On the first day of the campaign, saplings were planted at Kangla, Hiyangthang, Heibok Ching and Mahadev temple complexes today.
The drive which will cover 421 temple complexes of Umang Lais of Manipur began with traditional rituals and plantation of saplings by the volunteers of the Society.
Society President Surajkumar Okram said that the objective of the two-month long campaign is to respond to the global climate change.
It is also an endeavour to restore the essential and natural characters of having groves around local deities, he added.
Surajkumar expressed hope that the campaign would bring environmental consciousness among the local population.
At the same time, the programme would encourage plantation of endangered indigenous trees, particularly the tress which have socio-cultural and ritualistic values of the society in the day-to-day lives.
Surajkumar said that Manipur Green Society has already planted over 20,000 tress in the State since its inception in 2008 .
