Yumnam Sarat, Senior Accountant of Accountant General Office, Imphal, has been taken into seven more days custody by CBI/ Anti Corruption Cell custody, for further investigation under Prevention of Corruption Act.
Yumnam Sarat was arrested by CBI/ACB Imphal on January 31 following a raid at his residence at Wangkhei Angom Leikai and at his officer chamber, and then taken into police remand for seven days (till today).
Today, Sarat was produced before the Special Judge, Prevention of Corruption, Imphal East, by the IO along with a prayer for seven more days police remand.
During the proceeding, the IO submitted that on preliminary interrogation, Sarat disclosed the details about some of the 78 pension books which were seized during the CBI raid.
He also disclosed that his income came from the pension books, the IO explained adding that verification of the pensioners is still in progress.
The IO also alleged that Sarat is not co-operating with the CBI investigation as he is concealing some facts relevant to the case, and thus prayed for seven more days police remand for the arrested Senior Accountant.
On the other hand, Sarat filed a bail application through his counsel seeking release.
After hearing the submission of both sides and going through the records, the Court remanded Yumnam Sarat to police custody till 1 pm of February 12 .
The Court then directed the IO to get Sarat medically examined every 48 hours or as and when the need arises, before ruling that the bail application will be put up and considered at the time when Sarat is produced before the Court again.
It may be mentioned that CBI accused the Senior Accountant of amassing properties disproportionate to his known sources of income, to the extent of Rs 1,40,37,387 during the period from 2010 to last year.
Moreover, during the CBI raid, a huge number of bank passbooks, pension books, ATM cards, cheque books, immovable properties, insurance documents and cash amounting to Rs 31,14,710 and some ornaments were alleged recovered from his residence.
