Imphal, April 01 2019:
Congress MLA K Meghachandra has asserted that there was a conspiracy hatched by the BJP-led State Government behind the release of BJP's former Chandel ADC Chairman Loukhosei Zou on bail rather than convicting him for his involvement in a drug case amounting to around Rs 27 crore.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, Meghachandra said that Loukhosei Zou and seven other individuals were arrested from his official quarters together with a huge quantity of drugs, cash and firearms on June 20 last year.
The release of Loukhosei Zou on bail rather than awarding him befitting punishment indicated that some key leaders of the incumbent Government were also involved in the multi crore drug business.
The granting of bail to Loukhosei Zou is a conspiracy of the Government, he asserted.
One Inspector and the IO of the case were preparing a charge sheet against Loukhosei at the NDPS Court when Senior Advocate Chandrajit came with Jogeshchandra Haobijam and exerted strong pressure on the IO not to submit the charge sheet, said the MLA.
He alleged that Chandrajit held a meeting inside the Chief Minister's bungalow just before he came to the IO.
The SP's visits to the NDPS Court and initiation of fresh process to pave way for granting bail to Loukhosei Zou only exposed that the BJP-led Government was involved in the drug deal, Meghachandra said.
He said that Loukhosei Zou should be re-arrested and the drug case should be handed over to CBI or another trustworthy agency.
He further demanded all the Government leaders who are involved in the drug case to step down from their respective positions.
Meghachandra further asserted that the SP and the Senior Advocate who exerted undue pressure on authorities concerned to release Loukhosei Zou on bail should be booked.
There is no governance in the State as the BJP-led Government has been openly taking sides of drug smugglers, he added.
