Imphal, June 28 2013 :
Women committee of the United NGOs Mission Manipur has hailed the Court verdict of sentencing four rapists guilty of raping a U-morok (chilli) trader to life imprisonment.
The committee is also demanding a debate on crimes against women reported in the State during the ongoing Assembly session.
The committee also acknowledged the roles played by human right activists, lawyers, Bishnupur SP Radheshyam and the IO for enabling Court to arrive at this landmark judgement.
Appreciating the mental strength shown by the victim, the committee remarked that the victim would go down the history of Manipur as a courageous pioneer who battled for justice to the end.
Decrying that the incumbent 60 MLAs have not spoken a single word on the rising level of crimes against women, the committee pointed out that the MLA have the greatest responsibility to check crime against women, deliver justice if any such crimes have happened and rehabilitate victims of such crimes.
The committee has also put forward a charter of demands urging the Home Minister to table a detail report on he number of women raped, killed or harassed, number of such cases which have been disposed according to law, number of such cases for which charge-sheets have been field as well as the number of pending cases.
The Home Minister should bring out reports from all police stations regarding rape and murder cases including the cases of Satyabhama, Chanbi and Menaka.
To take up necessary measures for preserving evidence by upgrading mortuaries, to repeal AFSPA and upgradation of Forensic Science Department were other demands put forward by the committee.
