Bishnupur, March 28 2023:
A commotion broke out between Government officials and members of Moirang Part I Educated Unemployed Youths Pisciculture Co-operative Society Ltd when the former came to assess soil levelling work at a 100.95 acre of land allegedly belonging to the Society.
The plot of land is located at Village No 52 of Moirang.
The Society claimed that in 1969 their forefathers registered the land under the name of Chingnungsoi Collective Farming Co-operative Society.
However, with the coming of the Loktak Project, farming in the area became difficult.
With this, the name of the Society was changed to Moirang Part I Educated Unemployed Youths Pisciculture Co-operative Society Ltd and the members began earning their livelihood through fish farming.
It has been reported that Government officials including LDA officials began levelling the soil at the northern portion of the farm along Thamboktak Maril without issuing any prior notification to the Society and this ultimately led to today's furore.
Members of the Society have asserted that the Society has existed for decades and is in possession of all relevant documents.
It urged the State Government to stop the process of soil levelling in the farm and appealed to them to follow the guidelines and due process set aside by the law if the Government wants to acquire the plot of land or take up any type of developmental work in the farm.
Upon hearing of the incident, Thongam Shanti, MLA Moirang AC reportedly rushed to the site and brought an end to the soil levelling work.
