Handicraft expo begins

Inaugural function of a 10-day 'exhibition cum sale of handicraft' was held today at Majorkhul community hall with Autonomous District Council, Tamenglong Chairman G Soihem Haomei, Superintendent (Handicraft) W Birenjit Singh and Assistant Director (Handicrafts) T Rollee Vareishim gracing the event as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Organised by Imphal West Rongmei Women Upliftment and Cultural Association, Konthoujam Maning Tribal Awang Leikai under the sponsorship of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), handicraft products by local artisans are being put up for display and sale in 20 stalls in the exhibition.
Speaking at the occasion, Soihem Haomei observed that healthy participation by the local artisans indicate determination of the present generation youth to carve out a respectable living despite limited sources of livelihood in the State.
Urging the general public to encourage handicraft artisans by purchasing the items put on display at the exhibition, he also suggested that such exhibitions be conducted in a more frequent basis to enable the handicraft workers showcase their skill and products, help them promote traditional handicraft as well as sustain livelihood.
According to Assistant Director Rollee Vareishim concerted efforts would be made to enable the handicraft artisans exhibit their merchandise at the national level events.
