Imphal, July 26 2015:
The proposed construction of the Regional Water Sports Complex for Canoeing and Kayaking at Takmu hill has been abandoned after completion of about 65 percent of the building complex.
The construction works of the sports complex was taken up during the Fiscal year 2009-10 by Manipur Development Society Agency under Youth Affairs and Sports funded by the Special Plan Assistance (SPA), Government of India.
The building complex, including two hostels for boys and girls, was targeted for completion within three years.
Six years have passed since the construction works began and yet only 65 percent of the entire structure has been completed till date.
The construction site wears a deserted look with grass overgrowing the building compound.
Under the Special Plan Assistance (SPA) a sum of Rs 13 crore was sanctioned for construction of the building complex and two 90-bedded hostels for boys and girls and an added Rs 3 crore by the Loktak Development Authority for construction of canals for the complex.
The sports complex had been designed to provide a training platform to the Canoeing and Kayaking aspirants under Sports Authority of India after its completion.
However, even the construction of retaining walls for the canal have been left mid way and the two hostels which are meant to accommodate water sports players unfinished.
