Imphal, October 24 2016:
The Bhartia Kissan Sangha has proposed ban of GM Sarson (Mustard) today.
Bhartia Kissan Sangha spokesperson Telem Dara, in a press meet held at Manipur Press Club today said, the mustard variety GM Sarson has been found unsafe for consumption .
The WHO has also announced that the plant variety has high carcinogenic content, he added.
No immediate step to stop the plantation of the mustard variety has been taken in the State yet.
According to the WHO report, the plant, other than the high carcinogenic content, repels honey bees thereby decreasing the number of bees in areas where they are planted.
The Bhartia Kissan Sangha spokesperson has questioned why the people are continuing to plant the said variety of mustard even when WHO has warned against the health hazards of consuming the plant.
"Do we not have any other mustard variety that we can replace instead of GM Sarson?", he questioned.
He has further urged the authorities concerned to ban plantation of the said variety until further research.
