Imphal, September 23 2016:
Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), the economic wing of the Sangh Parivar has decided to launch a Swadesh (self sufficiency) movement in Manipur.
Speaking to media persons at Hotel Nirmala here today, Akhil Bharati Jan Sangh's Bahini Pramuk Ananda Sankar Panagraha said that SJM has been campaigning for economic self sufficiency across the country since 1991 .
He then appealed to the general public and the Government to support SJM's campaign for economic self sufficiency.
Many of the medicinal plants and other herbs found in the North East region in general and Manipur in particular can be processed, branded and exported.
Pointing out that Sikkim is now famous for its organic farming, Ananda Sankar said that there is no reason why Manipur cannot achieve such a feat.
One basic principle of SJM is to avoid dependence on foreign goods as much as possible.
Large scale import of Chinese goods through neighbouring Myanmar has serious negative impacts on the economy of the country, he said.
He then urged all the people to stop using Chinese goods.
SJM Manipur convenor Oinam Romen and SJM Odisha convenor Pratik Joshi were also present at the press meet.
