Thoubal, January 23 2023:
Three local bodies of Thoubal district jointly organised a sit-in protest at Khangabok Awang New Keithel against gun culture which is slowly gaining prevalence in the State and has led to death and injury of innocent civilians.
The three organisations are Khangabok Development and Students Union (KDASU), Khangabok; Youth Action Committee on Protection of Indigenous People (YACPIP) Khangabok and Rapid Action Committee (RAT), Khangabok.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Moirangthem Bidyaswor, member, KDASU vehemently condemned gun culture on behalf of the three groups.
He stated that the Government should conduct thorough background checks on people who apply for gun licenses and also look into their history of mental health.
"Aside from this, gun licenses should be renewed only after conducting a reverification on the applicant's general health and mental health", he asserted.
The participants at today's sit-in protest held many placards with messages such as "Stop gun violence", "Gun owners need mental health check up", "Investigate illegal gun owners" etc.
